10/10 Pitch We Love
David Arnoux - Twoodo
David Arnoux of Twoodo delivers a 10/10 pitch!
We love his style and technique as he delivers this pitch at Startup Amsterdam Bootcamp 2013.
What we think:
Introduction: (Starting at 1:30)
Great open hand and body gestures, he looks comfortable and relaxed (which makes the audience feel as though he's confident in his ability to deliver what he's saying)
Watch when he says the word 'delighted', he opens his palms and lets his audience know that he's sincere and genuine.
His voice even changes and the intonation goes up, suggesting that he really means it, without trying too hard.
Quote - The use of his opening quote to open up the minds of his audience is excellent
Story - Again, tying in his story on agriculture demonstrates his ability to visualize the meaning and purpose of his product.
Screen - David never turns to the screen behind him.
It's great for the audience to see how comfortable he is with his content and that he doesn't need to rely on it to speak clearly and concisely to them.
Visual (Body Language):
Lower Body Stance -
Great use of feet firmly planted.
David doesn't sway or move around too much which can distract the audience from really listening to his pitch.
Example @ 8:49
Hand and Arm Gestures -
Open hands and palms which are always facing towards the audience and expressing where he is with demonstrating Twoodo's highlights.
Example @ 4:17
Steeples his hands and fingers, which always sends a positive vibe to his listeners (this is also in conjunction with his vocal variety)
Example @ 7.31
Eye Contact - Great eye contact here as he engages with the audience to show how much he values them listening to what he has to say.
Facial Expressions - Expressive, without being overly animated.
Example @ 2:45 - David's eyebrows are raised and you can see his own enthusiasm and interest in his topic.
Vocal (Sound of Voice)
Pace/Flow/Rhythm - The flow of this pitch is fantastic. David never speeds up in order to just 'get through it' and he pauses/slows down certain points when he needs to.
Example @ 3:42 "Twoodo solves these issues" -
Controlled and paced to really sell Twoodo, without being overly exaggerated.
Example @ 4:45
Clarity and articulation
Clear and concise use of vocal, where David ensures that he enunciates and pronunciates all of his words with great effectiveness.
Example @ 5:31
Emphasis/Tone - Good use of emphasis in his vocal range to show how important his chosen descriptive words are to the product.
Example @ 2:58 - David mentions the words 'suffer' and 'complexity' and strengthens the tone in his voice when he does this. It really drives home the point to his audience.
Vocal Variety -
There is no mononity in David's voice and his intonation and style keeps his audience interested. He speaks with great enthusiasm and as though he is speaking 'to' them, not 'at' them.
Example @ 7:46
Pausing
When David moves on to a new point, he pauses for a split second in order to ensure that the audience knows he is about to go on to something different.
Example @ 8:12
Conclusion*
Fantastic conclusion that wraps up the pitch with 3 key things:
1.) Going back to the beginning with 'order to chaos' quote
2.) Positive confirmation on the product
3.) Call to action.
"You'll find us with the blue tie and shoes on"... (even pointing to his shoes).
*Note, too many times pitches are finished up with 'Well, I think we're out of time' or 'That's it, any questions?'
David ensures that the audience will remember him and the pitch very clearly.
Overall View:
Throughout the pitch, David remains calm, composed and very convincing, without ever coming across with a 'hard sell'.
Audiences love this, as his confidence is a 'quiet one' with controlled gestures, great eye contact and a steady pitch that he looks very comfortable with.
